Visual Arts Level 6 (with a digital photography major)

Course Component

Core Units

In the core units, learners examine visual communication from generic and multi-disciplinary points of view. They study business management and marketing, culture studies, the grammar of visual design, and the history of visual communication and semiotics. Having critically analyzed the history of visual communication, they develop the skills and attitudes needed to comprehend and evaluate the traditional and new media.

Internships

The core units include a compulsory internship. This may occur during semester (if they fit in with the learner’s timetable commitments), in semester breaks or in vacation periods. The internship initiates learners to a discipline-specific workplace so that they can observe and apply their knowledge and skills. Students identify and negotiate their own internship arrangements, write a report and submit a signed employer’s report.

Major Units

Students select a specialisation in order to develop a professional level of practical expertise in one particular field. By completing one of these specialisations they acquire the cognitive and creative capabilities as well as the requisite professional knowledge, skills and attitudes they will need to work in their chosen field. In the final 2 semesters they consolidate and apply their learning by managing and executing a major integrative project. These projects demonstrate their ability to review, consolidate, extend and apply their knowledge and techniques to a self-directed and professionally competent major work. They can either work individually or in interdisciplinary teams.
